The Area

The area of the South Hams has plenty to enchant and to keep you entertained, from the pretty coastal villages and deep lanes to solitary walks along the coastal path.

The picturesque village of Mothecombe, traffic-free and lost in time with its thatched cottages, local stone walls and fine traditional manor house, is less than a mile from Bugle Rocks through the lanes or you can arrive via the coastal path. There are also beaches here, on the Erme Estuary and at Meadowsfoot, and a pretty tea room in the old school-house in the field overlooking the sea.

Nearby, the delightful villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers face each other across the Yealm Estuary, cottages clinging to the steep hillsides and fishing boats and dinghies rising and falling with the tide. At low tide they are linked by a pedestrian causeway and you can walk across the river between them. There are several village pubs with some good food. Here too you can safely mess about in boats and go on creek-side walks that take you out on the 'carriage ride' - an easy route along the open coast with wonderful views.

Inland, in a fold in the hills, there is the old country hamlet of Holbeton, dominated by its fine church and with pubs for lunch or supper and a well-stocked local shop.

You can if you wish spend days exploring coast and countryside from Bugle Rocks without having to go beyond the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or coming across a major road. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a tranquil world far from the stresses of working life. Here you are able to relax and simply enjoy the wildlife - birdlife, flora and fauna - the beaches, views, villages, pubs, tea-rooms, wild-flower lanes, woodlands and much else; and at the end of the day on a clear night, a dark sky full of stars.

If you want some city life, Plymouth is only about half an hour's drive away; or you can visit Totnes, an historic local town set on the river Dart with its steep high street, interesting local shops and a castle, as well as restaurants, pubs and cafes.
